At the New York Comic-Con

Pic1741The original can be seen here.  The caption incorrectly identifies me as the creator of Punch and Judy for SLG.  I'm not, that would be Chris Reilly.  Still, it was nice to be noticed.

SPX 2006

Tomorrow I head off for the 2006 Small Press expo.  It's been a while since I've updated this site, I'm hoping for some fresh inspiration when I head out there.  The chance to hob nob and communicate with my fellow creators will be very much appreciated.

San Diego Comic-Con 2006 Day 1

Up at 4 AM, Eastern standard time, hop in the shower, and grab my bags, I've got a 6:15 flight out of Providence, first to Atlanta, then to San Diego.  My wife, Kathy, drives the car, first to pick up Chris Reilly (my more than occasional writing partner), then to pick up Dave Ray (the artist who did such a bang up job on Strange Eggs.  We breeze through security (though my bag was searched and some transparent plastic counter displays were scrutinized.)  We meet Brian Young, aka "the Chooch" in the terminal.  On the second leg of our flight we get to see She's the Man with Amanda Bynes, which is slightly worse than no movie at all.  By 1 PM Pacific Standard Time we're in our hotel rooms at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego.

Last year picking up our passses took nearly three hours in an interminable line.  Prepared for that eventuality I bring a book, but we're through the line in no time flat this year, the people throwing this shindig really know how to learn from their mistakes.  Now there's nothing left to do but some last minute shopping at Ralph's 24 hour grocery store downtown and get some socks at Payless as we wait for the 6 PM openning of the convention's Preview night.

Of course the Con is huge, and noisy, and full of promise.  Chris has an exhebitor badge with SLG Publishing, so he's already inside.  Strange Eggs #2 has come out, and this is a great reason to be at the convention.  I take my time to walk the floor, check out the booths, and see nearly the entire thing.  There's a lifesize Hot Wheel, which I assure you is much more than just a car, it's hot pink, twice as long as a Camaro, and has two engine blocs popping through the hood.  You can only look, not touch.

After the show I meet up with Paul Friedrich (of Onion Head Monster) and Eric Knisley (of Mickey Death.)  We are joined by Jason (sorry, missed his last name) and the previously mentioned Chris, Brian and Dave.  We eat at Dick's Last Resort, a rowdy restaurant where the waitresses treat you crappy and you're encouraged to through napkins at each other.  The music is too loud, the band is crappy, the food is slightly overpriced (but good) and the company is great.  Eric and Dave drew some sketches (Dave kept Erics).  Jason asks Chris and I about how to put together anthologies, and though we don't know much we know enough about this subject to be pretty knowledgable.

Here I am, in San Diego, and meanwhile back home, in Rhode Island, they are world premiering the movie Mixology, which I did with the group the Atomicons for the Providence Rhode Island arm of the 48 Film Festival.  I call home to see how the movie went over.  Those who saw it (friends and family, admittedly) said it was the first, second or third best film at the show.  We'll find out how we did at the Best of Providence 48 Hour Film Project.
(Date: August 23 Time: 7:30pm Place: Paff Auditorium, URI Downtown Campus, Shepard Building, 80 Washington Street, Providence Notes: This is a FREE event. "Best of Providence" DVD’s will be available for purchase the night of the event.)

San Diego Comic-Con 2006

Chris Reilly Strangled by Ox Baker

Here's a batch of pictures taken during Free Comic Book Day at Sarge's Comic Store.

The best one is below, where superstar wrestler and Big Brawl villian Ox Baker finally strangles Chris Reilly to death.  Hilarious.
